Wearing a purple dress designed by Singapore-born Prabal Gurung (whose creations are also worn by Lady Gaga and Michelle Obama) Kate Middleton just put him firmly on Vogue’s radar during her September visit to Singapore.

Just as importantly, Kate and William just put two more classic Singapore destinations on the map. Next time you’re there, head for the Botanic Gardens, where the new Vanda William Catherine orchid (purple and white) will be on display. The gardens also showcase the  Dendrobium Memoria Princess Diana, an orchid named after the late princess Diana, and the dendrobium Queen Elizabeth II.

Kate and William also revived a royal tradition by staying at Raffles. Nightly accommodation is usually over AUD/US$1000 although in September Wotif have negotiated deals around $700-$900 depending on your choice of suite.

Afternoon Tea at Raffles

Our favourite Kate-inspired experience? The Long Bar at Raffles, where you don’t have to stay to play. It’s the home of the Singapore Sling, and the interior is based on Malayan plantations of the 1920s. In addition to almost every alcoholic and non-alcoholic concoctions imaginable, the bar also serves traditional pub food. It opens from 11.00am to after midnight, Sunday to Thursday and on Friday and Saturday, to 1.30am. You don’t need to reserve a table – just walk in (though preferably in a Prabal Gurung frock: dress code is smart casual, just like Kate).
